Protecting Your Workers with Contractors Insurance

Contracting teams might only focus on one job, or they might offer a variety of services. Whether installing sprinkler systems or knocking out walls, contracting teams face risks.

Contracting can be a very labor-intensive job. Intense physical work often poses risks to the employee. The physical risk also poses liability risks to the employer. A contractor, whatever their trade, should improve safety conditions for their workers.

Proper worker protections, coupled with insurance, can help you protect your business.

Correct Insurance Coverage

Consider the ways you can protect your employees with insurance.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance: Most employers have to carry workers’ comp insurance. It can protect you in case an employee gets sick or hurt on the job. If the employee has to take time off to recover, this insurance can help you pay the employee’s treatment needs.

E&O Insurance: Employees could always make mistakes on the job. This could hurt the company and the client. If an employee provides bad service or advice, errors & omissions coverage can help you compensate a client for damages.

Most businesses also buy general liability policies. These policies can protect employees and visitors from onsite accidents. However, these policies may not be specific enough for contracting risks. Ask your insurance agent if you need this coverage.

Protecting Your Employees

Employee insurance shouldn’t stop you from protecting your employees by other means. A safe workplace is a low-risk environment.

  • Follow all occupational safety laws, such as OSHA guidelines. These requirements are often specific to an industry. Make sure employees are aware of workplace rights, and how to report concerns. Routinely update your employees of changing workplace safety rules.

  • Hire workers who have proper training and certification in their line of work. Do not allow untrained workers to manipulate sensitive systems. For example, do not allow a brick layer to work on electrical wiring.

  • Require workers to wear protective safety gear at all times. These may include hard hats, reflective clothing, masks, boots, and other practical gear. Do not allow anyone onto a contracting property without proper protective gear.

  • Require a reporting system for any safety hazards that might develop. Regularly check the site for signs of developing problems.

  • Immediately isolate any incidents that result in employee injuries or damages. Properly document the incident. Work actively with the employee to establish a course of action to help the employee recover.

When you need to protect your employees, the right insurance can help. However, safety practices will go a long way to protecting your contracting business.
